Striped Bass

Trophy Striped Bass Caught off of Maryland's Eastern Shore in the Chesapeake BayAnother full limit of Chesapeake Bay StripersMaryland Rockfish

Striped Bass, also known as rockfish, or striper, are known for the long, dark stripes that run down the length of their bodies. The longest striper ever caught anywhere was over six feet long, but in the Chesapeake Bay, they generally range from 18"-28" long in the summer months, and anywhere from 28" to 45" in the spring and fall. These fish are found all up and down the Atlantic seaboard, from Canada, on down into the Gulf of Mexico, as far west as Louisiana. These fish have also been introduced in other regions of the world, either for recreational fishing purposes or to control the populations of other species. It is also interesting to note that these fish can be found in both saltwater and freshwater environments.

In the spring and fall, we usually go trolling for the larger stripers, using bucktails or other artificial baits. In the summer months, we generally use light tackle with live bait, usually spot fish, a technique known as live-lining. Or, sometimes we'll use chum to draw the stripers in. The chum is usually composed of ground menhaden, or alewives.
