Hoopers Island

Hoopers Island is one of the oldest settlements in the state of Maryland. It is a chain of three islands (upper, middle, and lower), with the Chesapeake Bay on the west side and the Honga River on the east side. Most of the population live on the upper island. The lower island, once known as Applegarth is now uninhabited due to erosion, and a hurricane in 1933 that destroyed the bridge to the lower island. The island is named after Henry Hooper, who purchased most of the land here in the mid-1600s. Before this, the Yaocomaco people inhabited the island, and according to the folklore, sold the land for five woolen blankets. Due to the relative isolation of the islands, the land could be traced to just ten families for about 300 years.

Hoopers Island is a sportsman's paradise with plenty of fishing and hunting. Sika deer, geese, ducks, cormorants, pelicans, bald eagles, and other wildlife are commonplace here. As of 2000, just over 400 people lived here. Although the first industry on the islands was farming (mostly tobacco, grains, and some vegetables during the American Revolution), most people who live on the island now make their living on the water as commercial fishermen, mostly in crabbing and oyster harvesting.

We offer full and half-day Chesapeake Bay Maryland fishing charters off of Maryland's Eastern Shore, fishing for rockfish (stripers or striped bass), bluefish, croakers, Spanish mackerel, and other species. We also offer Chesapeake Bay lighthouse cruises, nature cruises and other Chesapeake Bay tours, floating crab feasts, and cruises to various destinations along the Chesapeake Bay. We are located on Hoopers Island, about 40 minutes south of Cambridge, Maryland. Regardless of the size of your group, or the uniqueness of your occasion, there is nothing that we can't handle! Come join us for a memorable experience on the Chesapeake Bay!
