Smith Point Light

Smith Point Lighthouse, Chesapeake Bay Lighthouse Tours

Smith Point Lighthouse is situated at the mouth of the Potomac river on the Virginia side. It is 52 ft. tall and has a range of 18 miles. It was first lit in 1897 and manned until it was automated in 1971. The lighthouse was powered by a long submarine cable that ran underwater to shore. Damage to the cable almost led the Coast Guard to decommission the light in the 1980s, but public outcry led to repairs which kept it in service. In 2005, the lighthouse was auctioned off to a Minnesota builder for $170,000. To this day, the lighthouse remains active. It is also worth mentioning that numerous attempts at building a lighthouse on Smith Point were made prior to the construction of this one. In the early 1800s, several attempts were made to build the lighthouse on land. However, erosion was a constant problem. In the middle 1800s, a lightship was used for the same purpose. However, this was destroyed in the Civil War. In 1868, a screw-pile lighthouse had been built, but was later destroyed by ice.
